Opening Concert of the 2019-2020 Orchestra Season

Updated: Sep 11, 2021

Music from China, the Czech Republic, and Spain by way of Russia will open Chamber Orchestra Ogden’s first concert of the 2019-2020 orchestra season, which takes place at Peery’s Egyptian Theater at 7:30 p.m. September 21.  Three works will be featured on this first concert.  Opening the concert will be Bedrich Smetana’s popular Three Dances from “The Bartered Bride.”  The Bartered Bride is a comic opera that of course leads to love conquering all.  The dances, titled Polka, Furiant, and Dance of the Comedians, are lighthearted and spirited, just like the opera.

Professor Shi-Hwa Wang, Professor of Violin at Weber State University will join for a performance of The Butterfly Concerto, a concerto for violin that was composed in 1959 by two Chinese composers in Shanghai during the Cultural Revolution.  It’s based on the ancient legend of the Butterfly Lovers, a tragic love story about a pair of lovers.  The composers He Zhanhao, and Chen Gang were students at the Shanghai Conservatory when they wrote this concerto.  Since the end of the Cultural Revolution the concerto has become popular worldwide.

The final piece on our one-hour and fifteen minute concert will be Capriccio Espagnol, Opus 34 by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.  This capriccio on Spanish themes began as piece for solo violin but soon morphed into the work that we know today.  Capriccio Espagnol is written five connected movements, Alborada, a set of variations, a return of the Alborada in a slightly different form, a gypsy scene and song, which includes virtuoso solos by a number of the instruments of the orchestra, and lastly a Fandango, which is a sensual Spanish dance.

Tickets for this concert are $8.00 and are available by phone at 801-689-8700, or in person at the Egyptian Theater box office M-F from 10 am to 6 pm.  They may also be purchased online at https://smithstix.com/music/event/23158/chamber-orchestra-ogden-sep-21.  As always active military, veterans, and their families are admitted without charge to all COO concerts, as are music students ages 8-18.
