The third concert of our 2019-2020 season takes place on March 28.  This concert of music and dance will feature the Utah Mariachi Program musicians and dancers who will join us for a fun-filled concert.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was an Afro-English composer and conductor who lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  His Rhapsodic DanceThe Bamboula, Opus 75 was written in 1911, the year before his death.  This is the work will open tonight’s concert.

2020 is the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth.  His Symphony No. 6, Opus 68 “Pastorale” is one of only two symphonies that Beethoven actually named, the other being the Symphony No. 3, Opus 55 – “Eroica,” and one of his few compositions to have deliberate programmatic content.  According to Christopher H. Gibbs Beethoven’s full title was “Pastoral Symphony, or Recollections of Country Life.”  This is one of our conductor’s favorite symphonies and we look forward to performing tonight.

Marx Huancas came to the US from Peru.  According to an interview conducted by Rocio Hernandez on KUER “Huancas was inspired to open a mariachi school in Utah as a way to help Latino parents like him who want to keep their families connected to their culture even while living in the United States.”

Marx is a talented performer and arranger, arranging music for his two ensembles, Mariachi Alma Ranchera de Utah, the adult group, and Mariachi Fuego, the children’s group.  For this concert Marx has arranged music that the orchestra will play as we accompany both groups, including dancers.

Tickets for this concert are $8.00 and are available by phone at 801-689-8700, or in person at the Egyptian Theater box office M-F from 10 am to 6 pm.  They may also be purchased online at https://smithstix.com/calendar-results/event/23160/chamber-orchestra-ogden-mar-28.  As always active military, veterans, and their families are admitted without charge to all COO concerts, as are music students ages 8-18.

Well-behaved children 8 and older are welcome to attend the concert.
